Since most applications store data on your hard disk and in your system's registry, it is likely that your computer has suffered fragmentation and accumulated invalid entries which can affect your PC's performance. Non-system processes like sndvol32.exe originate from software you installed on your system. "This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems." This is accessible by default from the system tray bar.
